Meat import permit

A special permit which allows companies to import meat products for analysis and testing has been granted to the Meat Industry Research Institute.

The head of the MIRINZ centre in Hamilton, Dr Rob Archibald, said the granting of the permit gave a major advantage to New Zealand meat processors.

“Food companies and entrepreneurs who find new products overseas can now bring them back to be analysed and tested by taste panels at MIRINZ.

“Until now, companies

have had to apply in advance for a permit for each product. Our permit can apply to a number of products and allows clients to contact MIRINZ while travelling, or even have an overseas agent send samples via MIRINZ,” he said. Fresh or frozen meat could be imported from Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, Denmark, and Sweden. Cooked products could be accepted from those countries as well as Japan and the E.C. Canned and hermetically sealed products could be brought back from any country.
