No case for Mace
Sir,—Thank you for replying to my letter (September 22). Yes, any suggestions that would reduce violence in our society would be of the greatest value. In the meantime the problem is still with us. Mr Griebel’s classes, in theory, will possibly give a lot of people a sense of security. He must admit that, against a determined male attacker, his course would be a non-event. A classic example of this attack was shown on the police television show, “Crimewatch.” The victim did not have a slightest chance of defending himself, let alone retaliating. As I lay in bed with my wife I, a 70-year-old exserviceman, realised that I would not have a hope in hell of defending myself and my wife without some form of protection like Mace. So, Mr Editor, I am afraid that you and Mr Griebel will have to come up with something more realistic before I am convinced that Mace should not be made legal. — Yours, etc.,
ARCHIBALD G. NELSON. September 22, 1988. [Sadly, in some circumstances, effective defence will be impossible with or without a weapon such as Mace. The question is one of balancing possible advantages against likely disadvantages. — Editor.]
