America’s Cup

Sir, —S. M. Wells (September 22) asked: “what satisfaction can he (Mr Fay) hope to gain from a victory in the courts when he was so conclusively walloped on the water?” Probably the satisfaction of knowing that, with a solid legal interpretation of the deed, boring one-sided “wallopings” may be avoided in the future. I join Stan Rivett in supporting Mr Fay, not because I feel that he is among the “... injured innocent,” but quite the reverse. Mr Fay is demonstrating a clear-headed, single-minded professionalism and, in doing so, lending some much-needed sophistication to New Zealand’s reputation. — Yours, etc., HAMISH COOP.
