No case for Mace

Sir, —Archibald G. Nelson’s letter (September 22) states that women of an older age bracket and the physically disabled are unable to learn self-defence; this is false. There are special selfdefence classes held for both older and physically disabled women, including women who are confined to wheelchairs, arthritics and the blind. These people are simply taught selfdefence especially modified to allow for whatever condition they might have. Could you imagine what would happen if a canister of Mace got into the hands o.* an attacker? A woman would no’ stand much chance! A weapon us'd against an attacker could just as easily be used against the victim. Learning selfdefence seems to be a better alternative to carrying Mace. — Yours, etc., REBECCA DENCH. September 23, 1988.
