Stokes retains lead on points table

Although the Aucklander, Tony Teesdale, won the final North Island regional round of the Dunlop New Zealand Rally Championship at Taupo last week-end, Canterbury’s Brian Stokes still retains his lead at the top of the over-all points table. After teething problems with his car in earlier rounds, Teesdale’s win was not enough to elevate him into the top 10 on the points register, and with Ray Wilson, in second place, an unlikely starter, Stoke’s likely

challengers at the final, double points round at Tokoroa on September 3 would seem to be Christchurch man Simon Davies and the Aucklander Neil Allport. Allport retired from the Taupo event with transmission failure and will have his work cut out to deprive Stokes of the championship at Tokoroa.

Points after Taupo (round 5): Brian Stokes, 120; Ray Wilson, 78; Simon Davies, 77; Neil Allport, 76; Robert Hart, 75; Marty Rostenburg, 75.
