Gondola
Sir,—Mr Pat Barrett echoes the opinions of many tourists. Most of those with whom I have spoken came from the overcrowded cities of the world and said that they found a special magic in our quiet places. Some who had revisited Queenstown after several years said that the once-unique little town in the mountains had lost its appeal and had become a replica of many such, more accessible, places. Mr Barrett has experience of tourist preferences and warns of the damage of a “gondola mentality.” We should cherish our local hills, our back country lakes and stations, not only for future tourist appeal but for the generations of New Zealanders to come. They will need the healing of uncluttered spaces, as our population grows and our cities expand. It is not naive to hope that New Zealand will progress, yet retain its natural beauty. — Yours, etc.,
ROEY WINN. August 1, 1988.
