British V.C. holder dies
NZPA-Reuter London Air Commodore Ferdinand "Freddie” West, the last surviving British Victoria Cross holder of World War I, has died aged 92. West was awarded his Victoria Cross after a mission over the Western front in August, 1918, when his two-seater re-
connaissance machine was attacked by seven German planes. During the attack an explosive bullet almost severed one of his legs, which fell into the controls, making the aircraft unmanageable. West retrieved the leg, regained control and manoeuvred to allow his rear gunner to drive off the enemy.
