Dead-heat in Oaks

NZPA-Reuter Dublin Sheikh Mohammed’s fillies, Diminuendo and Melodist, dead-heated in a thrilling last-furlong battle for supremacy in the Irish Oaks on Sunday. The result, which delighted Sheikh Mohammed, who also sponsored the $U5146,185 ($209,044) race, was a major shock as Diminuendo, ridden by American Steve Cauthen, was 9-2 on to win after her impressive Epsom Oaks victory last month. But the finish came just too late for the diminutive filly, which could not quite peg back the 11-1 chance, Melodist, a winner last time out in the Italian Oaks.

The French challenger Silver Lane, a 16-1 chance came third after being slightly squeezed for room in the last furlong.

It was Cauthen’s first triumph in an Irish classic although he had to share the spotlight with Melodist’s jockey Walter Swinburn, who won the Irish Oaks last year on Unite.
