Northern Dancer stock sale feature

NZPA-Reuter Lexington, Kentucky Eleven yearlings from the final full crop of Northern Dancer feature in the catalogue for the forty-fifth annual Keeneland July yearling sales this week. Northern Dancer, 11 times leading sire by average at the sale, was retired from stud duty in 1987.

The two leading sires of last year, Mr Prospector and Nureyev, are represented by 18 and 11 yearlings respectively. Mr Prospector and Nureyev were graduates of the sale.

The Keeneland July sale has produced the winners of the last six Triple Crown events. Five of them came out of the two-day six Triple Crown events. Five of them came out of the two-day select sale — Winning Colors (1988 Kentucky Derby), Risen Star (1988 Preakness and Belmont Stakes) and Alysheba (1987 Kentucky Derby and Preakness).

A half-brother to Winning Colors is among 22 yearlings in the sale by Nijinsky 11, the leading sire by average at Keeneland in 1985.

Last year Keeneland sold 295 horses for $U5109,554,000 during the two-day select sale for an average of $U5371,369. The one-day July Yearling Sale grossed a record $U520,161,000 for 141 horses. The average was $U5142,985, also a record.
