Upgraded skyhawks to be unveiled

Air Force and Ministry of Defence officials will gather at the Woodbourne air base on Thursday to see the rollout of the first two Skyhawk fighters from the $l4B million Project Kahu upgrading.

The Minister of Defence, Mr Tizard, will officially commission the updated jets which have undergone improvements to their navigation, operations and weapons control systems.

All 22 R.N.Z.A.F. Skyhawks are to be modified under the programme. The base adjutant at Woodbourne, Squadron Leader Don Haggitt, said the first test flight of the upgraded Skyhawks was expected to be carried out at the end of the week.

Skyhawks entered R.N.Z.A.F. service in 1970 and the numbers were boosted in 1984 when the Government acquired a batch of former Royal Australian Navy Skyhawks, which were being phased from service in that country.
