Joint venture tourism plan

PA Auckland Fullers Corporation and Muriwhenua Incorporation have agreed in principle to form a joint venture company to exploit’ tourism opportunities in the north of Northland.

The incorporation is the largest Maori land owner in the area and Fullers the largest tourism company, running sightseeing boat trips in the Bay of Islands and bus tours to Cape Reinga. Visitors are generally restricted to tours to Cape Reinga, except when they get permits from the incorporation. The new venture is expected to open up Tom Bowling Bay, Spirits Bay, and North

Cape. The incorporation’s chairman, Matiu Rata, said yesterday that the areas were among the richest parts of New Zealand environmentally and historically.

Four or five areas could be developed for family cabin accommodation and possibly for camping. Guided walks, horse treks, four-wheel-drive trips and fishing safaris were also likely, Mr Rata said. A number of tourism operators wanted to use the area for fishing parties and if the price were right, exclusive rights to some areas would be considered.
