Aid and trade

Sir,—Senator Melcher (January 16) displays outright arrogance with his implied threat that if we do not give more aid to the Philippines our trade with the United States could suffer.

He might acquire some principle if he stayed at home and endeavoured to control the immoral military complex that consumes 60 per cent of Americans’ tax, while millions of his people are living below the bread-line. It appears that Senator Melcher agrees with the millions of dollars supplied to the contras to butcher innocent people in Nicaragua because of their demo-, cratically elected socialist Government. Perhaps he would approve of the same treatment for New Zealand if we had a similar government elected? America’s destabilisation of Belau to establish a nuclear base is parallel to the actions of a fascist State, while New Zealand is held in high esteem world-wide, with its nuclear-free policy. Senator Melcher is not wanted here with his devious ways, regardless of his trade threats.—Yours, etc., STAN HEMSLEY. January 18, 1988.
