‘Green belt’

Sir,—lt is strange that in the latest controversy over another possible breaching of the “green belt” near Christchurch Airport, neither you nor any correspondent has raised the issue of the safety and welfare of householders or travellers in the area. Are all councillors, like Vicki Buck, too young to remember a tragedy in 1957 when four lost their lives in an air crash on an empty Russley golf course? I suggest, in the public interest, it would be timely to alert us all to the hazards that any further developments in the vicinity of the airport would present. That might prompt us also to recollect fiery tragedies at airports around the world; airports established in built-up cities and suburbs. I am minded myself, too, that Los Angeles had to face the colossal expense of moving a whole suburb to protect its citizens. In the light of all such tragedies, are we justified in deliberately repeating such risks in our quest for dollars? —Yours, etc.,

(Mrs) V. F. JOBBERNS. January 14, 1988.
