Summer searches

Sir,—Once again we have a spate of missing trampers, etc., with death being prominent, and much sympathy goes out to the families involved. However, we must not look beyond the facts.

The great majority of such people have many things in common. They tell no-one of their intentions, are never prepared for . misadventure, take the weather for granted, cost the taxpayer thousands each year and many are from overseas. As a member of a search and rescue team, I will always be available in these emergencies, to give up my time, use my supplies and equipment, lose much-needed wages, search day and night and risk my life on dangerous mountains, bushchoked gullies and rain-swollen rivers. I give 100 per cent and ask for nothing in return, but the answer to this question: Everyone has a brain. Why do some people not use it? — Yours, etc.,
