U.S. senators to meet Lange
By BRENDON BURNS, political reporter Five visiting United States Senators will meet the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, when they arrive today at Ohakea air base, near Palmerston North. He will hold discussions with the Senators for about 45 minutes, before they depart for Wellington. The unusual courtesy of the Prime Minister breaking his holiday to meet the Senators is able to be interpreted as a sign of a warming in the relationship with the United States. Four of the senators are Democrats, the party which has the majority in the Senate.
They are Senators James Exon, John Melcher, Howell Heflin, and Tom Harkin.
Republican Senator Larry Pressler is also a member of the delegation. They will spend this evening in Wellington after a briefing at the United States Embassy. The Senators, their wives and officials, will fly to Mount Cook tomorrow. Later they will fly to Christchurch, where they will have the United States Antarctic programme explained to them. The Minister of Overseas Trade, Mr Moore, will be host at a barbecue for the delegation at “Mona Vale” tomorrow evening.
