N.Z. ship protests

NZPA-AAP On board the Dar Mlodziezy The tall ships were on their way to Sydney last evening after an emotional departure from Hobart and a spectacular start to their 610-nautical mile race. Just after 2.30 p.m., after 20 minutes of chaotic jostling in Storm Bay, 10 nautical miles south of Hobart, the ships began to cross the starting line after the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, fired the starter’s gun on board the frigate H.M.A.S.

Canberra. First across the line was the 108-metre square rigged Polish ship, Dar Mlodziezy, with a 45-metre barquentine — The Spirit of New Zealand — close behind and flying a protest flag. The New Zealand ship was objecting to Dar Mlodziezy using her engines to stop her crossing the starting line before the race began. But observers on this ship said that Captain Leszek Wiktorowicz had no choice but to put his engines in reverse to avoid a collision.
