Winds hit shooting

PA Wellington The infamous winds of the Seddon range scattered bullets like buckshot in the National Rifle Association championships at Trentham yesterday, leaving Upper Hutt’s John Whiteman clear of the Ballinger Belt field. For the first three of four Ballinger Belt matches — over 500, 600 and 800 yards — the wind was no great problem. But when the 300plus field moved to the extreme distance of 900 yards they had to face a wind which constantly altered in.

speed and direction. Whiteman, one of three Whitemans in the top 14 of the field after yesterday’s action, shot well at all four ranges. Several leading marksmen suffered at the 900 yards. The former Ballinger Belt winners, Rex Chilcott (Clevedon), and Te Puke's Diane Collings both missed the target completely with their opening shots. The defending champion, Collings, dropped 10 points in the wind to end the day eighty-third, 13 points behind Whiteman.
