University chimney

Sir, —Universities in cool climates need boiler houses, and boiler houses need chimneys. L. M. Dodd (December 29) appears to subscribe to the school of thought which holds that a utilitarian object may be considered acceptable only if it is tricked out to look like something else, as for example the proposed tower for New Brighton, which I guarantee will be welcomed since it is designed to look like a lighthouse. Without the chimney and its attendant boilers, a crisper mid-winter temperature in the lecture rooms and laboratories might serve to quicken the thought-processes, and L. M.

Dodd could discover that boiler house chimneys are not such a bad thing after all. The chimney presents one of the basic geometric solids, as befits a university with such a notable department of mathematics. Counselling is available on campus for those who feel unduly disturbed by tall structures such as towers and chimneys. — Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. December 30, 1987.
