Victoria Square tower
Sir,—l like Jenny Feltham’s sense of humour. In “The Press” Reporter’s Diary column on December 30 the following comments were included in an item under the very appropriate heading, “Quite an eyeful”; “We come, writers, painters, sculptors, passionate lovers of the beauty of this city, to protest with all our strength against the erection of this useless and monstrous tower.” According to Jenny the 300 signatories to the above letter were all fiercely opposed to the plan to spoil the heart of Paris with the Eiffel Tower. Perhaps a more appropriate heading for my letter would be “Vivat Victoria Square Tower.” My New Year resolution for 1988 is; “As a lover of Christchurch to support with all my strength the construction of the Victoria Square tower.” It will help to stem the inevitable growth of unemployment. Christchurch owes it to the South Island to do everything possible to encourage tourists to drift south. — Yours, etc., J. K. MOIR. January 1, 1988.
