Speed of trucks
Sir,—l commend Neil Hampton (November 28) for voicing his concern about the speed of trucks on our roads. This problem, which has always existed, will only get worse as a result of. the new regulations concerning road transport. Changes have been made to existing regulations allowing them to be more easily enforced. This involves drivers filling in log books accounting for all working time each day; both actual driving and loading and unloading time. A compulsory 30-minute break is taken after si/ 2 hours and a maximum of 11 hours work time allowed. Failure to observe this will result in an automatic threemonth disqualification and $2OOO fine for the driver, plus company penalties. The effect of this has been to impose an element of urgency and fear into many of the drivers. I urge Neil Hampton to investigate these iniquitous regulations while he is able. — Yours, etc.,
D. J. ARCHBOLD. November 30, 1987.
