Labour Party

Sir,—With reference to an article, “National union bill defeated” (November 26), most of this bill is just pure Rogemomics. I would wonder why Mr Rodger has not pushed such ideas on behalf of the Labour Government The trouble is, of course, the overwhelming, self-defeating mutually destructive conflict of interest between the political wing of the Labour Party and the trade union movement. After the recent Labour Party Conference, could anybody be blamed for wondering where the party stopped and the trade union movement began? Or the latest wage round, which has absolutely nothing to do with the real world of productivity and the fight against inflation. If only the Labour Party could stand apart — not to hurt the trade union movement but to save it — then the present Government could go some way down the track to making sense of industrial relations and the unemployment that goes with it But alas, I think this is impossible. It will require a different type of Labour Party to do just that. — Yours, etc.,

ALAN FALLOON. November 26, 1987.
