Battle to save P.O. continues

The battle to save the Redcliffs Post Office will continue after yesterday’s meeting between the M.P. for Lyttelton, Dr Peter Simpson, and a deputation of local residents. The group of representatives from Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs and the surrounding area met Dr Simpson for an hour’s discussion on the proposed closure in the new year. According to the president of the Redcliffs Super Sixties Club, Mrs Ella Webb, the Government M.P. was sympathetic to the residents’ concents and indicated that he would continue to support alternative services to replace existing postal and post bank facilities. “He was concerned about the situation and

aware of the problems we could face if the post office closed on February 5, He indicated that he would do everything to help,” Mrs Webb said. The deputation outlined the difficulties facing superannuitants and beneficiaries, many of whom were without transport In 1986, a petition to save the post office gathered 900 signatures. The organisers have been toid that the petition is still valid. Meanwhile, Mrs Webb had received a large number of telephone calls offering support for a second petition. “We will keep on lobbying to save our post office. If it is felt that another petition will help, we’ll organist it," Mrs Webb said.
