Nelson area mining applications discussed
Delegates of the newlyformed Nelson Area Parks Action Coalition (Napsac) say they were impressed by the positive attitude of the new Minister of Conservation, Ms Helen Clark, at their meeting in Wellington on Tuesday.
Discussions were held about two prospecting applications by the multinational mining company, C.RA., opposed by Napsac, over the Mt Arthur Tablelands and Cobb Valley areas of North West Nelson Conservation Park. '
Ms Clark and the new Minister of Energy, Mr David Butcher were at the meeting, as well as two senior Department of Conservation officials, Mr John Holloway, the director of Lands and Fauna, and Mr Allan Ross, the principal conservation officer for land and water. “Ms Clark gave us a very encouraging reception, and we are sure she is now well aware of our concerns," said Mr Tony Haddon, Napsac’s convener and one of the group’s delegates to Wellington. The idea of a no-mining area within the Conservation Park was also explored, he said, but no commitments were given at this stage. “The Ministers said they needed more time to consider all aspects before making any decision,” said Mr Haddon. A no-mining area would need the consent of the Minister of Energy,, as well as that of the Minister of Conservation. The Napsac delegation also had talks with members of the National Party environment caucus, headed by their spokesman on environment and conservation, ■ Mr Roger McClay, and with the Government Junior Whip, Mr Trevor Mallard.
