Poles written off

Cars crashing into power poles and bridges in Riccarton Borough have recently cost the council $3600 in debts which it has had to write off. The four drivers involved were all affected by alcohol, and so their insurance was not valid. The council’s finance committee heard last evening that efforts by council staff and. debtcollection agencies had

failed to find the offenders or recover the debt. A further three cases, with a total cost of $4700, may be written off soon because persons cannot be located. All the accidents happened last year or earlier this year. The council has now included power poles and street lights in its property schedule, at a premium of $l5OO.
