Depot opened

Christchurch’s Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, marked the completion of four and a half years work when he opened the Christchurch City Council’s Linwood parks and recreation depot yesterday. The $1.6 million complex stands on the Smith Street site of the original depot built in 1951. It is base to 166 council employees. Planning for the new depot, built in two stages, began in 1982. Stage one was expected to cost $1.2

million. Part of the work budgeted for this stage was later transferred to stage two. The final completion price of $1.6 million brought the project in under the approved budget of $1.7 million. The Linwood depot is the council’s main servicing centre for city parks, reserves and other facilities. Mr Neiel Drain, the director of parks and recreation, said yesterday the new depot would allow for more efficiency.
