Q.E.II Park drives named

Names familiar from the 1974 Commonwealth Games are again at Queen Elizabeth H Park. Sections of the road network within the park have been named after athletes who took part

The main entrance road into the park is now Dick Tayler Drive. The loop road providing access to the main foyer entrance is Jaynie .Parkhouse Drive.

Mark Treffers Drive provides entry into the park from Bower Avenue and Robin Tait Drive is an unsealed road allowing access from Frosts Road. The names were announced to Christchurch City councillors yesterday

during discussions of parking control measures within the park in readiness for the greater use during summer. Various restrictions and parking bans will be imposed on the access roads.

The names met with approval by councillors, but not the rather more mundane titles given to two service lanes.

Stadium Lane provides access for emergency and goods vehicles to the stadium and plant room. Utility Alley gives access to a car-park for the disabled, staff, and emergency and goods vehicles. “Utility Alley? Sounds dreadful,” said Sir Hamish Hay. “We should have called it Ron Scott Drive.”
