City tower
Sir,—l know that a lot of people will be disappointed if the tower does not go ahead, but there are other possibilities. A replica of the Tower of London could be built — very useful for imprisoning French , agents, and such a design would fit In very well with Christchurch’s. architecture. Or perhaps a Tower of Babel to symbolise visitors speaking many languages; or a Leaning Tower of Pisa (but would this be an earthquake risk?) My best suggestion is a Southern Hemisphere Eiffel Tower, which could be built in Ashburton or Timaru, places that have no natural vantage-points; beautiful views of the gardens and the distant Alps. Further, there would be room to build restaurants and shops on the various stages, and there would be employment for builders, painters and the Glenbrook steel mill. Why go to Paris when you could come to southern Canterbury. — Yours, etc.,
