Mozambique
Sir,—According to Mr Lange (October 6) the C.H.O.G.M. will be discussing: aid (for "beleaguered Mozambique." Mozambique is not a beleaguered country, it is a communist dictatorship of the worst kind, has refused to hold elections and has imprisoned thousands of Mozambicans in concentration camps. Yet there is a suggestion that the Commonwealth countries should provide military assistance ,to this corrupt communist Government I would hope non-com-munlst or claimed non-commun-ist members of the Commonwealth will reject’absolutely any request of this kind. I note that every time Renamo (anticommunist) is mentioned, “South African-backed” is added, yet evidence for this backing- is never produced. The fact that the Soviet and. ’ its., surrogate States are backing communist FrelimO, is somehow overlooked. Similarly, the South African Government always • has the prefix “racist” or ' similar added, but how often does one see the prefix "Marxist or communist dictatorship” when speaking of Zimbabwe, Zambia or Mozambique? — Yours, etc., -ER. WILKINSON. October 5, 1987. ;•
