Proportional vote
Sir,—Rather than be diverted into discussing ancient Greece, D. J. Round and L. J. Robinson (September 30) should consider modem Europe. France, after long experience with proportional representation, has rejected it in favour of our system. “The Economist” of September 26 speculates that this might almost eliminate the previously growing number of neo-Nazi representatives. D. J. Round will, no doubt, label this unjust, but I am sure that France will be the better both for ceasing to encourage divisive views and for recognising the benefits of representation based on location rather than Interest groups. Somewhere, compromise has to be found. If it occurs locally, as now, government can be effective and decisive. If interest groups build into numerous national parties, compromise. must come in Parliament When it severely hampers decisive gpt
