Salmon tagging
Sir,—Replying to N. J. Johnson (October 1), the Ministry of Fisheries operates two tagreward schemes for salmon. Anglers who hand in tagged hatchery salmon heads are entered into the Freshwater Salmon Angler Lottery and are eligible to win a prize of either $lOOO, $lOO or $2O. Commercial fishermen and marine recreational anglers fishing outside acclimatisation districts and handing in salmon heads are entered into the Marine Tagged Fish Lottery, which is used for tagged fish of any species caught at sea. Anyone handing in tagged fish caught at sea receives h/i $5 reward and is eligible for a lottery prize of $2OO or $lOO. The co-operation of anglers in handing in tagged salmon heads is greatly appreciated and it is essential to provide data for research and management of the salmon resource. The return of tagged heads by commercial fishermen has also greatly assisted in determining the extent and nature of the salmon bycatch and this information will be used to protect and manage the salmon resource. — Yours, etc.,
COLIN MOYLE, Minister of Fisheries. October 1,1987.
