Mass escape from Fiji jail

NZPA Suva More than 114 prisoners fled a medium-security jail 15km from Suva last evening after setting fire to buildings there, police say.

They were said to be armed with spades, garden forks and cane knives. The prisoners broke out of Naboro Prison, on the main westward highway from Suva. Police and soldiers were sent to the area and set up roadblocks on the way to Suva, 20km to the west Radio Fiji said prison buildings had been burned down. The AAP news agency reported residents in the Naboro area and in Lami and other residential areas west of the capital

were warned to lock thendoors. Little information was available . from the authorities.

Police said they could only say there had been a mass break-out, and that there had been fires in the prison complex. Security forces strengthened patrols in the city and suburbs. 5 There was no confirmation of a report from Fijian sources in Sydney that the escapers were militant Taukei who had threatened to “burn Suva down.”
