Sir,—Ratepayers of Christchurch will probably be expected to meet the financial loss of the air race. If approval is given for road improvements at the eastern end of the Causeway, ratepayers will be expected to meet the projected cost of about

$350,000, a very high figure for just one intersection. In order for this plan to be executed, it will be necessary to reclaim a portion of McCormacks Bay, yet the council has a policy of no more reclamation of the Estuary. I trust that the Department of Conservation will advise the Minister not to approve the further loss of the Estuary. Our Estuary is a national asset and must be protected. There must be an acceptable alternative plan for this particular intersection, one which will be less costly and will not involve reclamation of our valuable asset. — Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN.
