Mr Wm Johnstone

Mr William Johnstone, who was chief piping tutor at St Andrew’s College for many years, died recently in Invercargill. Mr Johnstone succeeded Mr William Fowler as piping tutor at St Andrew’s in 1944, and formed a good partnership* with the drill instructor, Mr Alastair Hilson. The college band won the first post-war pipe band contest at Timaru in 1946, and since then has been

one of New Zealand’s premier college pipe bands.

For many years Mr Johnstone was a member of the City of Christchurch Highland Pipe Band, a committee member of the Canterbury Highland Pipers’ Association, and a judge at solo piping competitions.

Mr Johnstone officially retired in 1979, but continued helping learner

pipers for several more years. Former pupils remember his remarkable patience, thoroughness and good humour. Mr Johnstone had emigrated from Scotland to Southland when he was 12, and already a competent piper. He later worked in Christchurch for the North Canterbury Hospital Board.

He is survived by his wife.
