Obituary Professor H. W. Rhodes

Professor Harold Winston Rhodes, who was a member of the English department at the University of Canterbury for 38 years, has died at,Governor’s Bay. He was 82. Professor Rhodes joined the staff of the university in 1933. He was wellknown as a writer, speaker and broadcaster on literary topics. He is

remembered for his encouragement of many young writers, including Frank Sargeson and Denis Glover, and his interest in his students. Professor Rhodes, born in Australia, studied medicine and then decided his interest lay more in the arts. He completed a master of arts degree with honours in English litera-

ture. Professor Rhodes was appointed to Canterbury University’s second chair in English in 1964. He was a past chairman of the Canterbury branch of the New ZealandU.S.S.R. Society, and several times visited the Soviet Union. Professor Rhodes is survived by two sons.
