Community-based committees

About 120 people attended a meeting this week to discuss the Social Welfare Department’s new community-based committees. Mr Doug Hauraki, of the department’s cultural development unit, told the meeting that the Government had given the community the reins “but the rest is up to you.” Recent legislative changes allow district executive committees to be set up throughout New Zealand. Christchurch will have a committee of up to seven local community members to monitor and

advise the department. The meeting on Tuesday was one of the first steps in informing the public about the nominations, which should be forwarded to the Minister of Social Welfare. People at the meeting expressed concern about the possible composition of the committees and about the method of making nominations to the Minister. Some were sceptical about the new committee’s role. It was decided that further meetings needed to be held to discuss possible nominations to the committees.
