More Fijian M.P.s?

NZPA-AAP Suva Fiji’s Great Council of Chiefs last evening accepted a plan to increase the guaranteed number of Melanesian Fijian members of Parliament from 22 to 36, informed sources said. Fijian Indian representation would remain at 22 and other races at eight in a 66-seat House of Representatives, the sources said. A committee of the Great Council had been working on an original proposal for an increase

in Fijian members of Parliament to 32, but this was rejected by the Fijian militant Taukei movement as not enough to ensure future dominance of Parliament. Figures laid down in the 1970 independence Constitution allowed for 22 Indian members, 22 Fijians and eight from other races with a total of a 52-seat House. Under the Great Council resolution approved last evening there would be 36 Fijians, 22 Indians, and eight others for a total of 66.
