Prominent jockey dies
The prominent Canterbury jockey, Tane Matthews, died in Christchurch Hospital yesterday. Matthews, aged 22, rode the winners of 210 races, his most notable successes being on Bronze Valley (Marlborough Cup), Gaelic Bid (Marlborough
Cup and Nelson Cup), Steel King (James Hazlett Stakes) and Ruff (John Grigg Stakes). In 1983 he partnered Dolmar in the Grand National Steeplechase, finishing sixth behind Royal Kassel.
