Obituary Mr H. C. R. Blackwood
Mr H. C. R. (Toby) Blackwood, a former general manager of the State Insurance office, has died in Wellington. He was 88. Mr Blackwood began his career with State Insurance (then the State Fire Office) in 1915 in Dunedin. He served in Hamilton, Palmerston North, and Christchurch, and was appointed manager in Invercargill and later Hamilton. In 1951 he was appointed head office secretary, and he became general manager in 1954. On his retirement in 1960 he
had served nearly 45 years.
In retirement he served as deputy chairman of the Earthquake and War Damage Commission.
Mr Blackwood served on the Eastbourne Borough Council and was Deputy Mayor for nine years.
He was actively involved also in the work of the Methodist Church, serving on many committees. He conducted choirs from the age of 19.
Mr Blackwood is survived by his wife and two children.
