Gatcombe’s Pride big chance in Winter Cup Trial tomorrow

Special correspondent Wellington In a small but even field, the Feilding four-year-old, Gatcombe’s Pride, gets a chance to return to the winning circle when he tackles the Winter Cup Trial, the first leg of the Manawatu Hunt Club’s double at Awapuni tomorrow. While he has won nine times from 17 starts, Gatcombe’s Pride has only been successful once on Awapuni. That was last June in a class 4 event and just before he embarked on his trio of Wellington winter wins. Gatcombe’s Pride’s most recent success was in the Cornwall and since then he has run fifth in the Whyte and third in the Parliamentary, just over a week ago. Hanayome, Kar Dan and Cody appeal as the trio likely to cause most problems. Hanayome, from Trentham was impressive in winning over 1400 m at Trentham last week. A good draw here will help her chances. Kar Dan failed to flatter when eighth

in the Parliamentary, but he rattled home for second in the Whyte. Last year he went on to win the Winter Cup at Ricca rton. Cody has a couple of sprint wins, at Hawera and on Trentham’s first day, while Fairfield Lad and Irish Boe are capable milers. Form in the second leg, the Bainesse Handicap is wide open, but Kamazam, beaten only by Thalia’s late bid on Trentham’s middle day, is the form runner. An improving Park Ash, fourth in one outing at Trentham may take some beating. The day’s feature race will be the Manawatu Hunt Cup and with the expected absence of Rarni, Mighty River is the one to beat. Last time here Mighty River was a moderate third in the Manawatu Steeplechase. He was sixth in the Hawke’s Bay chase and then second, albeit well beaten, in the Riddiford. This will be more to his taste, though Hone Heki, yet to run at Awapuni, may press him hard.
