Sprinters add interest to Te Awamutu Cup

Special correspondent Auckland The way in which Bourbon Boy and Jimmy Te Cobai manage 2000 m, after looking so good over shorter courses, is going to be an interesting outcome of the Te Awamutu Cup at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting at Te Awamutu tomorrow. Jimmy Te Cobai failed when set 2000 m at Trentham last March, but his excellent form meanwhile, over 1600 m, demands that he be allowed another chance at the longer distance. Jimmy Te Cobai certainly runs 1600 m as though not likely to be troubled by a further 400 m. So does Bourbon Boy, with a win over Bonecrusher to his credit over the distance, and at weight-for-age. After winning a weight-for-age 1400 m at Tauranga, Bourbon Boy was a disappointment, only fifth in a 1400 m at Matamata last Saturday, spoiling his chance by an inclination to hang on the home bend. The race did him no harm, otherwise he would not be in at Te Awamutu, his trainer, Howie Mathews, having been pretty careful with him all along. In the Matamata race Bourbon Boy took a hand in the pacemaking and, usually such a generous finisher, failed to run on in the home straight. He will need to race more truly this time. Up until now he has mixed, very successfully, racing left-handed, the Matamata way, and right-handed, as at Te Awamutu. From all accounts Jimmy Te Cobai was a bit too keen for his own good

when he ran his 2000 m at Trentham last March, in the Wellington Championship Stakes, for three-year-olds. His tenth placing was right out of character. A week previously he managed a close second, and a week later he ran third, also close, at Tauranga. Each time, it must be said, in a sprint. Jimmy Te Cobai, lately, has been running 1600 m in great form, following a class 3 win at Avondale with another win in the class 1, Whyte Handicap at Trentham. It was another good, game finish that secured him his Whyte win. Great Estate has any number of solid middle-distance performances to his credit and one of the best would certainly get him into the finish this time — he might be the one Bourbon Boy and Jimmy Te Cobai have to beat. Mister Lumlee, Call Me Kiwi, Stellar Gold and Tough Guy have to be considered. Old Nick, back after a let-up from racing, and a Hastings visitor, Ragatan, are also interesting. Old Nick has not started for a month or so. Eased for a bit after giving himself a knock, he missed little work, though, and has satisfied his trainer, Mike Molander, lately, when travelled to Pukekohe, then Ellerslie, for galloping. Though most of his racing has been over shorter courses, Old Nick has competed with credit over 2000 m and he was beaten only narrowly in this race two years ago. Ragatan, a four-year-old gelding, ran on solidly, it seems, for a last-start win over 2200 m at Hastings on June 27. He has been racing well these last couple of

months. On May 16 he won the Foxton Cup and, between then and his Hastings win, ran up three minor placings in as many starts, one of them a fourth in the Fay, Richwhite Cornwall.

So Regal and Hopscotch dominate a moderate-looking field for the second leg of the T.A.B. double, and main sprint, the Redoubt Park Stud Handicap. One or the other seems certain to win.
