Trainers approve moveable rail

By

DAVID McCARTHY

The new moveable rail recently purchased by the Canterbury Jockey Club should be in place for the Christchurch Hunt meeting tomorrow week. The rail, which cost more than $50,000, is made of aluminium alloy and can be shifted to different parts of the track in a day. It is expected to make for much more flexible use of the track for trial and racing purposes. It is a major factor in the proposed increased use of Riccarton for race trials and its purchase has been strongly supported by the Riccarton Turf Club which run the trial

fixtures. It should also provide better footing for the horses, especially at winter meetings, when different parts of the track can be used as a course proper. Moveable rails are widely used overseas and the Riccarton version was imported from Australia. It met with approval when examined by local trainers yesterday. They were impressed with its strength and flexibility and felt the depth of the actual rail was a big advantage. The old permanent rail has been left in place in the meantime but will be dismantled after the Grand National meeting.
