Wright top scorer

In spite of not scoring in the last two rounds of the Air New Zealand soccer league the colourful Mount Wellington striker, Billy Wright, still leads the race for the Golden Boot scorer’s trophy, having notched 11 goals after 16 rounds. The Scottish import, Gary Parker, scored twice in the last round and now has 10 goals, the same as Papatoetoe’s Noel Barkley, who has struck three times in the last four rounds. Parker has an interesting background in soccer. He is a former Hearts professional and totalled 40 league and cup goals when playing in Napier’s central league win-

ning side in 1986. Parker, aged 21, represented Scotland at both cricket (under-19 team) and rugby (schoolboys) before joining Hearts. The leading scorers are:— Wright 11; Parker, Barkley, 10; Braithwaite, Bill Horn (Wellington), nine; Brent O’Neill (Wellington), Greg Little (Mt Maunganui), Jack Winters (Manawatu), Carville, all eight; Grant Lightbrown (Mt Wellington), Norrie McGlinchley (Hutt Valley), seven. Christchurch’s scorers are: Braithwaite nine, Carville eight, John Hanson, Danny Halligan, Paul Nicholls, three; Ceri Evans, two; Verweij, Brent Berry, Gary Lund, one.
