Linwood tests table tennis leader

Linwood, which is languishing near the bottom of the points table, narrowly failed to topple the runaway leader, Avonside, the latest round of inter-club table tennis. In spite of Karl Entwistle winning his three singles in straight sets, Avonside struggled to win, 6-5. Linwood’s near miss was largely a result of two upset wins by Crawford Liddell, who has shown improved form. Avonside II had an upset 65 win over the second-placed Lansdowne. Pam Shadbolt and Blair Lockhart narrowly failed to carry Lansdowne, which had included a lastminute replacement in its team, to a win when they both lost their final singles matches. The Avonside fourth team scraped to a 6-5 win over Riccarton, with Lyndon White winning all his singles matches, while Dallington had a clear-cut 9-2 win over Avonside 111.
