Trade union movement

Sir, — During a recent television programme which covered the human aspects of unemployment in the forestry industry, I could not help wondering what the old-time trade unionists would have had to say about the situation. Not a murmur was heard from the present leadership, but then we hardly hear a squeak from them these days except to reject out of hand any move in the direction of improved industrial relations. Perhaps they are too busy acting as lap dogs for the Labour Party, beinj conned into supporting

policies which have pushed 100,000 out of work. When will they learn that Rogernomics is to do with competition. The trade union movement should be out there making all the political parties compete for its support. Instead the movement continues some weird inter-play with one political party — forgetting all the time that its first priority is to secure the best deal for its members, whatever direction it might come from. — Yours, etc.,

ALAN FALLOON. June 25, 1987.
