Full-time four-wheel-drive station waggon
Mitsubishi Motors, which took over the operations of Poriruabased Todd Motors, Ltd, at the beginning of the month, has just introduced a $36,000 full-time four-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Lancer station waggon in New Zealand. The first vehicle in which Mitsubishi uses the full-time four-wheel-drive system, the waggon features an 1800 cu cm engine and five-speed manual gearbox. It shares its station waggon body with the Mirage Spacewagon, which has been available in this country for some time now.
Designed for daily use, the Lancer’s ground
clearance and over-all height are very much in line with Mirage Spacewagon dimensions. The front suspension is similar to two-wheel-drive models, featuring MacPherson struts, coil springs and a stabiliser bar, but a new five-link system with coil springs and a stabiliser bar carries the rigid rear axle. The transmission features a driver-operated differential lock which, with the limited slip differential at the rear, gives the Lancer excellent traction on slippery surfaces. Other features include power-assisted steering, tinted glass all round and an AM/FM radio stereo cassette.
