First V6 engine for Toyota
Toyota has introduced its first V 6 engine. It is a four camshaft, 24-valve 2litre engine, said to develop 103 kW at 6000 rpm. The 1992 cu cm 60deg V 6 has a similar camshaft drive arrangement to that used in Toyota’s fourcylinder twin-cam engines, with the inlet shaft on each cylinder bank driven off the crankshaft by a toothed belt and the exhaust shaft rotated by the inlet shaft via Toyota’s “scissors” gear. It employs a conventional gear on the one shaft engaging a spring-loaded gear pair side by side on the other shaft, thereby eliminating chatter.
The engine has been fitted in the Toyota Camry which is intended for export markets later this year.
