TV blitz nets 3000 fees
House-to-house calls by television licence inspectors in Nelson and Wanganui late last year resulted in the payment of almost 3000 new fees, said the chief executive of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, Mr Nigel Dick.
The calls were part of a consciousness raising exercise aimed at reminding television owners to pay the public broadcasting fee. Mr Dick said a number of other regions, including Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin would be targeted soon.
The “Broadcasting, We’re on your Side” campaign was followed by a national rise in the number of fees paid, and he said that these gains had made the exercise a worth-while undertaking. “We wanted to remind people that the Broadcasting Corporation is a dualfunded organisation, with many different public broadcasting services being provided both from advertising revenue and from the public broadcasting fee,” Mr Dick said.
