Lake Ellesmere
Sir, —The negative thinking of our local bodies is amazing. Lake Ellesmere, which the Minister of Internal Affairs wishes to protect and promote through a national conservation order, is undoubtedly of national significance for wildlife and recreation. The Catchment Board has already displayed its short-sightedness by opposing a national conservation order, despite its own technical report recommending that support be given. Similarly, the United Council opposition (April 20) smacks of parochialism and pathetic clinging to power. They do not apparently understand the 1981 Water and Soil Amendment Act directs the deciding water and soil authority to consider the needs of regional planning schemes, the local communities etc., also, local bodies should accept that primary industry has already taken its share of the lake’s resources, being responsibleftpr its much diminished size and}reduced water quality. They
should welcome the Ministers initiative as promoting one of Canterbury’s best recreational and tourist attractions. — Yours, etc.,
BERNIE CALDER. April 20, 1987.
