Demands of politics
Sir, —In your leading article of April 22 you express the hope that Mrs Hercus’s resignation will not deter... women of talent from seeking a career in politics. I should think it would have quite the opposite effect. A woman of talent might well be prepared to give some 10 years of her life to politics. Mrs Hercus has established a sound and timely model. Given the frenetic kind of life that politicians, especially Cabinet Ministers, appear to live, and given that the evidence points to our having only one life, her action suggests an appropriate degree of prudence. It has always been a feminist hope that once women attain positions of power they wiil establish new patterns of behaviour that will enable people to live more fully human lives. Until women M.P.s are sufficiently numerous to bring such essential change to the politician’s lifestyle, Mrs Hercus’s choice provides an excellent alternative.—Yours, etc., PAULINE O’REGAN. April 22, 1987.
