ROSEMARY PERRY April 7, 1987.
[Felicity Price, spokesperson for the, Canterbury Cot Death Society, replies: “Rosemary Perry is right to be concerned that babies are not overheated. What the Canterbury Cot Death Society recommends is that babies should sleep lightly clothed in a warm room — with a thermostatically controlled heater set at around 15deg Celsius. Controlled warmth in houses in Canada and Sweden does seem to help reduce cot death in some way since the cot death rates in those countries, where the winters are very cold, is very low indeed, below one per 1000 babies. We believe that Canterbury parents should follow this example and thermostatically heat rooms. What relevance the cold has to cot death is not fully known, but it does seem to be one of the many trigger factors. However, we would like to add that heating a baby’s room at around 15deg Celsius is still no guarantee that the baby will not die of cot death. It simply seems to reduce the risk.”]
